How to Choose a Hoodie
Fit, fabric weight and zip vs pullover are the three decisions that make or break a hoodie. Here's how to get each right.

The short answer: decide on the fit (regular or oversized), pick a fabric weight for the season, and choose zip-up for easy layering or pullover for a cleaner look. Then check the size chart — hoodies vary a lot in length and sleeve size.
Fit
Regular-fit hoodies sit at the shoulder and hip and layer easily under jackets. Oversized hoodies have dropped shoulders and a boxier body for a relaxed look. Cropped hoodies end above the hip and pair well with high-waisted bottoms.
Material
- Cotton: soft and breathable, but can shrink.
- Cotton-polyester blends: common for hoodies; hold shape well and pill less than some pure cotton.
- Fleece-lined: brushed interior for extra warmth.
- French terry: looped interior, lighter and more breathable than fleece.
Weight
Fabric weight is sometimes listed in GSM (grams per square metre). As a general guide, lighter hoodies suit layering and mild weather, while heavier ones feel more substantial and warmer. If no weight is listed, look for words like "lightweight" or "heavyweight" and whether it's fleece-lined.
Hood style
Double-layer hoods hold their shape better. Drawstrings allow adjustment; some designs skip them for a cleaner look.
Zip vs pullover
| Zip-up | Pullover | |
|---|---|---|
| Layering | Easy on and off | Needs to go over your head |
| Temperature control | Open or close as needed | All or nothing |
| Look | Sporty, versatile | Clean, casual |
| Pockets | Usually two side pockets | Usually a front pouch |
Seasonal use
Light French terry works for spring evenings and summer travel. Fleece-lined or heavier hoodies suit autumn and winter, often under a jacket. See how to choose a winter jacket if you need an outer layer too.
Sizing
Check chest, body length and sleeve length on the chart. For oversized designs, start with your usual size. For cotton-heavy hoodies, remember they may shrink slightly if washed warm.
Styling
- With jeans and trainers for everyday wear.
- Under a denim or bomber jacket.
- Oversized hoodie with slim trousers or leggings — more ideas in how to style oversized clothes.
