How to Style Oversized Clothes

The secret to oversized clothing is balance. Pair volume with structure and your outfit looks intentional rather than too big.

The short answer: balance loose with fitted. If your top is oversized, keep your bottoms slimmer or cropped — or go fully relaxed on purpose with a defined shoe and a clear shape. Make sure the shoulders and hem still sit where you want them, so the item looks deliberately big rather than the wrong size.

Start with proportions

Oversized pieces add volume. Outfits look most considered when that volume is balanced by something more structured, or when the whole look is relaxed but clearly shaped — for example, wide trousers and a boxy tee with chunky shoes.

Tops

  • A front tuck (tucking just the front of a tee or shirt) shows your waistline without losing the relaxed look.
  • Dropped shoulders are part of an oversized design; sleeves shouldn't cover your hands unless that's the intent.
  • Push up or roll sleeves to show the wrist and lighten the silhouette.

Bottoms

  • With a big top, try slim or straight trousers, leggings, cycling shorts or a fitted skirt.
  • Wide-leg or baggy trousers work with oversized tops when the fabric is lighter or the top is cropped.
  • Hems that show a little ankle stop the look feeling heavy.

Layering

Layer lighter under heavier: a fitted tee under an oversized shirt, or a slim roll-neck under a boxy blazer. Let a layer peek out at the hem or collar to add depth.

Footwear

Chunky trainers and boots have enough visual weight to anchor loose outfits. Slimmer shoes pair best when the bottom half is fitted.

Accessories

A belt over an oversized shirt dress or blazer creates a waist. Crossbody bags and caps add structure. Keep jewellery simple so the outfit doesn't feel cluttered.

Examples

Men's

  • Oversized tee + straight jeans + chunky trainers.
  • Boxy hoodie + tapered joggers + clean white sneakers.
  • Oversized overshirt over a fitted tee + chinos.

Women's

  • Oversized shirt + cycling shorts or leggings + trainers.
  • Big hoodie + mini skirt + boots.
  • Boxy blazer + fitted top + straight trousers.

Common styling mistakes

  • Wearing a size up of a regular-fit item instead of a piece designed to be oversized — the shoulders and sleeves end up in the wrong place.
  • Going loose everywhere with no defined shoe or shape.
  • Hems so long they cover your hips and shorten your legs, unless that's the look you want.
