Cotton is a natural, breathable fibre; polyester is a durable, quick-drying synthetic. Which is better depends on what you're doing.

The short answer: cotton generally feels soft and breathable and suits everyday wear. Polyester is typically more durable, holds its shape and dries quickly, which is why it's common in sportswear. Blends combine some of each. How a fabric feels also depends heavily on the weave or knit, weight and finish — not just the fibre.

Material differences

Cotton is a natural plant fibre. Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from petroleum-based polymers (or, in recycled polyester, from recycled plastics).

Cotton vs polyester (general characteristics)

Breathability and moisture

Cotton absorbs sweat, which feels comfortable in everyday heat but can stay damp during hard exercise. Polyester moves moisture along the fibre and dries fast, which is why many athletic tops use it. Mesh and lightweight knits change the picture for both.

Durability and care

Polyester keeps its shape and colour through many washes and needs less ironing. Cotton is easy to wash but can shrink and fade; see how to prevent clothes from shrinking.

Pros and cons

Cotton

  • Pros: soft, breathable, comfortable next to skin.
  • Cons: creases, can shrink, slow to dry.

Polyester

  • Pros: durable, quick-drying, crease-resistant, keeps colour.
  • Cons: can feel less breathable, may hold odours, sensitive to high heat.

Common uses

  • Cotton: T-shirts, shirts, jeans, underwear, sleepwear.
  • Polyester: activewear, outerwear, swimwear linings, easy-care shirts.
  • Blends: everyday tees and hoodies that balance softness with shape retention.
