How to Choose Jeans

Fit, rise and fabric are the three things that decide whether jeans work for you. Here's a clear breakdown of each.

The short answer: pick a leg fit you like, a rise that sits where you're comfortable, and a fabric with the right amount of stretch. Then use your waist, hip and inseam measurements — see how to measure for jeans — to choose your size.

Straight

A classic that works with most shoes and tops. A safe first choice if you're unsure.

Slim and skinny

Closer through the leg. Stretch content matters for comfort. For more on slim cuts, see slim fit vs regular fit.

Relaxed and wide/loose

More room through the seat and leg. Balance them with a fitted or tucked top, or go fully relaxed — see oversized vs regular fit.

Rise

Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband. High rise sits at or above the navel and can lengthen the leg line; mid rise sits just below; low rise sits on the hips. Comfort when sitting is a good test.

Inseam

Inseam sets where the hem falls. Full-length jeans reach the top of the shoe; ankle-length or cropped styles end higher. Check the product's inseam against yours.

Denim weight and stretch

  • Rigid (100% cotton): structured, durable, breaks in over time; little give.
  • Stretch (with elastane): more comfortable and forgiving; can loosen with wear.
  • Heavier denim: sturdier and warmer; lighter denim: cooler and softer.

Wash and colour

Dark, even washes look smarter and suit evenings or work. Mid and light washes feel more casual. Black and grey are easy to pair. Dark denim can transfer dye at first — wash it separately (see how to wash different fabrics).

Sizing

Jeans use waist/length, numbered or letter sizes. Always check the chart. For rigid denim, match your measurements closely; for stretch denim, there's a little more flexibility.
