The short answer: dresses are usually described by their silhouette (A-line, shift, bodycon, wrap), their length (mini, midi, maxi) or their construction (shirt, slip, sweater). Anyone can wear any style — the right one is the one that suits your occasion, comfort and taste.

Dress styles

A-line

Fitted at the top and flaring gently from the waist, like the letter A. Easy to move in and works for many occasions.

Wrap

Wraps across the body and ties at the side, creating a V-neck and an adjustable waist. Great for work and daytime events.

Shift

A straight, simple shape that skims the body without a defined waist. Clean and easy to dress up or down.

Bodycon

Close-fitting, usually in stretch fabric. Popular for evenings and parties.

Shirt dress

Built like a longer shirt, with a collar and buttons. Often belted; practical for everyday and smart-casual wear.

Slip dress

Lightweight, often bias-cut with thin straps and a silky finish. Can be worn alone, or layered over a tee or under a knit.

Sweater dress

Made from knitwear; cosy and warm for autumn and winter, often with tights and boots.

Maxi, midi and mini as styles

Length is also used as a style name — a "maxi dress" is often flowing and relaxed; a "mini dress" can be anything from a skater to a shift shape.

Fabric makes a difference

Cotton and linen feel cool in summer, jersey is comfortable and stretchy, viscose drapes softly, and knits add warmth. See the clothing materials guide for details.

Choosing a dress

Think about the occasion, the weather and how you want to feel. Check the size chart — bust, waist and hips all matter for fitted styles — as explained in how to choose the right clothing size online.
